Spring Fashion Trends for the Plus-Sized Woman

2013 Spring Fashion Trends for the Plus-sized Woman

Many of you may still be freezing from the cold weather that is still outside. You may not even want to talk about spring right now, but believe it or not, it is only a short time away. This is the time to begin thinking about what you will wear in the spring; especially if you are full-figured woman. As with anything in the fashion world, nothing is ever new. Most trends are just reinvented, repeated or reprocessed from the past. It is time to get excited about the upcoming season and the current trends; some of which you may already have in your closet.

Many people are already in the planning stage when it comes to their wardrobe. Spring is the time when you will take off the layers of clothing you wore in the winter months to show off your body that has been concealed underneath for so long. A lot of retailers place most of their concentration on the average-sized woman as it relates to fashion. However, there is a massive market for plus-sized women and some retailers are hopping on to the bandwagon by making some outstanding fashion items available in store this spring. There are some hot outfits for the spring 2013! So I encourage you to start shopping right away. You can incorporate some of these suggestions below to acquire your spring outfits.

spring1. The Crop top

Yes, that’s what you heard. Crop Tops, honey! Many people think that crop tops are only for women with thin waists. Plus-sized women with a little thickness in their midsections are not exempt. You can rock the crop top as well and even surprise yourself. You better believe that and don’t let anyone tell you differently. You just have to know how to wear it. You don’t have to show your whole midriff, but you can reveal a little belly skin at the upper part of your waistline and be still relaxed and confident. How? You can wear a high-waist bottom such as a shorts, pair of pants or skirt. You seriously won’t go wrong with this. If you don’t feel comfortable this way, then you can add a tank top below the crop top and call it a day.

2. All White Colors

Yes, from your head to your toe in white. The all-white look is taking its correct place in the fashion world and designers like Vera Wang and Roberto Cavalli are adding this to their spring collection. In the recent past, we have seen an overload of bright neon and blocked colored styles; so much so that I think we have forgotten how nice and crisp we can look in a white ensemble. Don’t think about what the fashion trend critiques think. You can look absolutely amazing in white too even if you are a plus-size.

3. Appealing Peplum

Directly from the 1980s comes the peplum look. It has been around for several months, but fits in nicely with the spring season. From peplum tops to peplum skirts, you can look fabulous.  It brings out the chicness in you and for a plus-sized woman; it hides those curves that you don’t want seen. You can wear the peplum dress in a solid color or in a colorful animal print. You have varied choices because this piece will always be appealing no matter what.

4. Floral, Ruffles and Stripes

Floral designs are always going to be associated with spring. It gives you a girly feeling and a feminine look. For the plus-size woman, you can wear floral in a pant suit or a blazer. Floral is a definite must-have for spring. Stripes are going to be the in-thing for the entire year of 2013. You can wear stripes in dresses, rompers, tops, skirts and blazers. They help to give the impression of a trimmer you and will give your body its balanced appearance. During the 1980s, it was somewhat fashionable to dress in blocks of color. Well, you can bet that it is back in the fashion rotation. Dressing in blocks of color will preclude anyone from concentrating on just one section of your body. However, your color block outfit should depend on the kind of weather you are dealing with.

Last, but not least, you should anticipate that plus size retailers will overwork ruffles this spring. I personally love ruffled tops and a playful ruffled hemmed dress, so I will be enthusiastic about stealing some new pieces at good prices. These are the trends to expect this spring 2013. With these, you will remain stylish and current.

Fashion trend: the long necklace

So I am sure most of you ladies look forward to seeing who wears what on the red carpet right? Well I know with my schedule I just can never seem to be in the right place at the right time to see it live, so I always go back to style.com and check out what looks were hot each year. I gotta tell you ladies, this year I was less than impressed  BUT, the one thing that caught my eye and seemed uniquely timeless were the necklaces.

Now normally we see either the simple diamond necklace or we see the big statement necklaces, but not this year! This year it is all about the long necklaces. This style has been around for ages and ages, but as we all know style is cyclical. The one thing I love about this is that you truly can take a piece that is meant to be casual and turn it into an antique inspired look.

Chanel is a perfect inspiration for this look, especially when we start thinking about layering the necklaces. This is a style that I think every woman can make her own because these necklaces have so many different styles. I have seen simple antique inspired animals, chains and pearls, and even simple stones like turquoise.

So how would you wear it?

-Focus on one specific look that is your “go to style” and pick out a long necklace that speaks to that style. Something not too heavy but that will make a statement against a simple long top or tunic.

-Get funky with it. Try an edgier office look and mix long chains and pearls over a structured white button down. Have the necklaces on the outside of the collar and you will have a look that is so “Devil Wears Prada.”

– Keep everything else simple. If you opt for a bigger, flashier necklace, keep the earrings simple (think studs). You don’t want to look like a gypsy and have a whole lotta “crazy” going on!

Remember ladies that the style can completely change depending upon what kind of long necklace you buy and how you wear it. Try different looks in the store to see which one you think is the most flattering on you, and don’t forget, this look can go from day to night so don’t be afraid to try the same necklace with your weekend outfits too!

SPRING FASHION TREND: Snakeskin

Wow!!!  Snakeskin is back again for Spring and Summer.  I can’t wait to dig out my white skinny jeans with a black cami and beige jacket, and to top it off I’ll add my snakeskin sandals and carry a clutch!

Snakeskin works great with long skirts, capris, leggings, dresses, and jeans.  It also works great with all neutrals too.  If you look around the stores you’ll see colored snakeskin that really is HOT this year, especially the cobalt blue.  These wild colors will make any outfit POP.  Just remember one thing: don’t mix other animal prints with it – that’d be too much, and tacky as well!

Try a Retinoid for Younger Skin

Lotions or creams that contain a retinoid are your best shot at making your skin look younger. Piles of research prove that this vitamin A derivative really can undo wrinkles and discoloration caused by sun damage. At the drugstore, look for the word “retinol” in the ingredients list (the higher up it appears on that list, the better); one great option is RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($22, drugstores). A dermatologist can prescribe a stronger retinoid cream, like Retin-A or Tazorac. Retinoids can be irritating at first, so ramp up slowly until you can tolerate using one every night. You should apply a retinoid cream on your neck as well, but because that skin can be more sensitive, use it more sparingly and not necessarily nightly.
