Exercise That Actually Works!

Exercise is one of the most important aspects of healthy living and everyone should make it a part of their daily existence. There is no excuse for not exercising. In fact, you can even do simple exercises while sitting or while working around the house. In this article, I will discuss three popular exercises that will not only make you healthy, but improve your posture and create awareness of your body.

The first is Pilates. If you are a runner, mother, golf or tennis player, you may have heard of this type of exercise and the benefits it provides. There are many people of varying fitness level who may have tried Pilates to improve their flexibility, posture, core strength, and range of motion. Making Pilates a part of your consistent regimen will result in more focused breathing and deep concentration.

You will become more aware of the way that your body is working. It teaches you how to stand tall. In fact, you will automatically want to pull your abs in and stand taller while brushing your teeth or doing some other chore. Pilates trains you mentally and physically. It helps you to build coordination and body symmetry.

The most significant benefit of Pilates is personal awareness of how you sit, stand, move and the effect of the bad habits you may have developed. For example, it can help you to become aware of that lingering pinch in your neck from sitting at the computer the entire day with hunched shoulders and a telephone held between your ear and shoulder.

Secondly, there is yoga. There are various styles of yoga that requires more energy than others like Ashtanga and Power yoga. Any of these two yoga styles improves your muscle tone. Lyengar and Hatha yoga use less of your energy, but they still offer the benefits of strength and endurance. These exercises use less movement and more defined poses for proper alignment.

The poses in yoga that build upper body strength include:

  • Upward dog
  • Downward dog
  • Plank

As you age, upper body strength is very crucial. The standing poses, particularly if you hold them for more than a few extended breaths, build hamstring strength as well as strength in your quadriceps and abdomen. The chair pose will build strength in your lower back. Yoga improves your posture in every sense of the word. It also benefits your breathing. In yoga, you are instructed to do deep breathing exercises to improve your lung capacity. This type of breathing relaxes you and reduces stress.

Last, but not least is the Zumba exercise, which uses a variety of music and dance choices such as reggae and meringue.  The dances are fun, energetic and exhilarating. They incorporate interval training with deliberate and quick moves for shaping and toning the whole body. With Zumba, you target specific areas of the body such as the:

  • Abs
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Legs
  • Butt

Some of the dance moves are so fast that it creates a cardio program that increases your heart rate and your metabolism. The music guides you to do hip swaying, toe tapping and arm swinging movements. Most dance routines will last for an hour, but you can go at your own pace. Zumba is like having a party while you lose weight, create optimal health and feel good; all at the same time.

Adapting to today’s fashion trends despite your age

Ok, so you are getting older and you still love to look chic and stylish! What else is new? You are not alone and you don’t have to feel guilty about making your own fashion statement. You don’t have to answer to anyone, but yourself. Do what pleases you, but don’t go overboard. Since you know who you are, no one can decide exactly what you should wear. However, in this article, I am going to give you little tidbits that have worked for many people over the age of forty.

Most women love clothing and love to be a part of the new fashion trends. However, not all fashion trends are meant for the younger or older crowd. You have to pick what works with your body type, appearance, height, complexion, and personal taste. You could be over forty and still be passed for a younger person. You could probably get away with dressing younger. But it all depends on how you feel about it.

If you look younger than your age, you could probably pull off wearing thigh high boots and reasonably short dresses. This can be done without looking inappropriate. However, before you consider those thigh high boots, here are some things to consider:

  • Wear with slim fitting jeans
  • Wear black opaque tights
  • Put on some sheer pantyhose

Don’t buy thigh high boots made of patent leather. Choose a matte-looking material like suede. It will give you a mature look that is appealing and stylish. Forget about the complex shoe details. Choose styles that are simple.

Things to consider

If you want to dress age appropriate and still look confident and alluring, here some things to consider:

  • Dress feminine and leave the cute look to the younger women. This means you won’t dress in tier clothing or too much frills. Instead, choose an appealing wrap neckline, tailored suits, long statement earrings, the all black look, leopard prints and leather.
  • Wear fitted clothing, but not too tight. Get your right fit. This means you should know the measurements of your body before you go shopping.

There are some timeless items that are still in your wardrobe to wear. Your silk scarves and double-breasted jackets are never going to be unfashionable; no matter what age you get to.

Simplify your wardrobe

Simplicity is usually the key to looking fabulous and yet trendy. You don’t have to resort to the more expensive look. Clothing that you see on the red carpet worn by celebrities can be yours at a fraction of the cost. Go to designer stores and take a peek in their ‘look books.’ You will get plenty of ideas there for someone your age.

olderfashionTry to wear colors that complement your skin tone and tones down your outfit such as burgundy, camel and bottle green. Remember, when you were in your thirties, you used to go for the bright colors to spruce up your wardrobe for a much youthful look. After forty, you would take it down a notch.

Do you see yourself in an olive green top, camel skirt coupled with a burgundy blazer? That is truly chic, sophisticated and smart. What you did was to inject just a little color into your outfit to help bring out your personality. The outfit is simple, but will spark up some conversation on your way to the office or out to dinner.

Matching your hairstyle with your wardrobe

Your wardrobe should also match your hairstyle.  Older women will wear a shorter hairdo even if they have to cut their long tresses. It gives you a more classy and stylish look. Watch what your favorite celebrities in your age group are wearing. They are not always right, but close to it. You can emulate their hairdos or something similar as well as some of their fashion statements.

Feeling confident about your womanhood

The female species is dynamic, strong, powerful, sensitive, intuitive, thoughtful, resourceful, creative and attractive all at the same time. What other species carries these wholesome attributes and still can remain feminine? When a woman can succeed in combining all of these amazing attributes and bring them into her personality and life, it makes her feel alive, vested, confident and positive. She is now confident of her womanhood. Without these qualities, low self-esteem can step in.

If you asked the typical male species what he thinks is attractive in a woman and what he looks for in a potential partner, he might say that he is looking for a woman who is attractive, easy going, caring and confident. And if all of this could be put into two words, he would probably choose ‘femininity and confidence.’ Most men are drawn to confident and attractive women.

high-esteem-womanHow do you have confidence?

A woman should first be in love with her body; meaning her body type, fashion choices, hair and style of hair. Remember, that you are not responsible for certain aspects of your body; those that are genetically specific to you. So if you were born with thick lips and big eyes, you should use it to your advantage by choosing lipsticks and eye shadows that complement those features. If you have a wide hip, soft skin and thick eyebrows, you would wear clothing to complement your hips and shape your eye brows every two weeks. Use your best skin care product to improve and maintain the quality of your skin.

You are already created the way you look. There are many ways that you can change things that you don’t like about your physical features. Facial plastic surgery and breast enhancement surgery are two ways that women choose to make themselves look better to increase their confidence. While I am not entirely suggesting that you resort to these methods, I want you to know that you have options. However, with that being said, in the meantime you can work with what you have and work on the things that make you unhappy. Muscle toning and cardio exercises are two ways to start.

If you are a woman reading this, have you ever put on an outfit, created a new hairdo, bought some new shoes and decided to dress up for a date or outing to stand in front of the mirror and think: “Wow! Is that really me?” Doesn’t it make you feel confident? Although, many may think that a dress, shoes or hairstyle is superficial, to a woman, it really isn’t. This is what she uses to make herself feel confident on the outside; especially if she gets a lot of compliments on her appearance.

Look at Jennifer Lopez – she is a woman of irrefutable outer beauty. Her entertainment career calls for a certain image. In the past, her body language and Spanish accent didn’t make her look or express herself like the Queen of England. However, she took steps to change that. Jennifer Lopez is only one instance that could serve as a motivation to other women who need help in boosting their femininity.

Mentally speaking

On the other hand, YOU are not just your physical image, but you have a spiritual and emotional side as well. In fact, women are more emotionally than men. A woman clearly uses her mind a lot and that is why she is the MOTHER of children due to her nurturing and thoughtful ways. To be and feel confident, a woman should nurture herself mentally.

She should believe in who she was created to be and tap into her spirituality to bring out a better person on the outside. This is quite possible since most women don’t mind going to therapy to work out past issues. Confidence also comes from maintaining composure despite things happening in the environment around you. This is the difficult part for a woman because of the emotional connection with her world, but it can be done if she has a good support system.

Boosting confidence

Here are some things to boost your mental confidence:

  • Think positively
  • Hang around positive people
  • Get rid of negative influences
  • Educate yourself
  • Read more books about self-development and stories that will empower you
  • Live a balanced life; not overdoing anything
  • Stay in your role and if you need help from others, choose who and ask for the help
  • Feel worthwhile. You are here for a reason
  • Create silence in your world and meditate
  • Eat a balanced diet and exercise, which is a great reliever of stress
  • Live a stress free life; slow down and have fun!

It is essential to hold on to your power as a woman by learning to believe in yourself. Create and improve a mental, emotional and physical balance to build harmony in your life and confidence with your womanhood.

Try a Retinoid for Younger Skin

Lotions or creams that contain a retinoid are your best shot at making your skin look younger. Piles of research prove that this vitamin A derivative really can undo wrinkles and discoloration caused by sun damage. At the drugstore, look for the word “retinol” in the ingredients list (the higher up it appears on that list, the better); one great option is RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream ($22, drugstores). A dermatologist can prescribe a stronger retinoid cream, like Retin-A or Tazorac. Retinoids can be irritating at first, so ramp up slowly until you can tolerate using one every night. You should apply a retinoid cream on your neck as well, but because that skin can be more sensitive, use it more sparingly and not necessarily nightly.

Making Time for Yourself

Making time for yourself is important, but it takes a desire to create a life that you want and not try to please everyone else. If you allow others to take over your life and to eat up your time and space, you will never reach your destiny. You don’t have to feel guilty or selfish about making time for yourself, because time is something you cannot retrieve when you lose it to frivolous things that don’t empower you.

Taking time to nurture and pamper yourself is especially good for your entire outlook on life. You can get too busy sometimes in rigid routines that steal your dreams and your focus. Making time for yourself helps you to relax more and enjoy specific activities that bring you happiness.

Here are some things you can do that will make you feel good:

  • Get a  one-hour massage and facial
  • Get  your nails done
  • Take  an art, yoga, singing or dance class
  • Go on  a cruise
  • Read a book
  • Go to  the beach
  • Relax  in a Jacuzzi
  • Work  out a gym
  • Go to  a museum
  • Go on  a lunch date
  • Do  some meditation
  • Attend  a support group
  • Take  quite walks
  • Make sure you get six to eight hours of sleep
  • Eat  right
  • Go see  a movie
  • Go to  a basketball or baseball game or a concert
  • Spend  time alone just gathering your thoughts

You have to learn how to manage your time to include you. If you have a burnout or meltdown, then you won’t be any help to yourself or anyone else. Life can get very hectic and filled with unimportant things that are time wasters. Do not make any unrealistic promises to anyone or you have to push yourself harder to meet certain obligations. Be cautious in the decisions you make that will take up a lot of your time.

Make sure you build time blocks that will help you to manage your time better. Limit interruptions from others that will set you back. Develop ways that will help your family to contribute to household activities so you can free up some of your time.

Keep a daily “things to do” list that will help you to effectively organize your schedule and your time. Have a calendar that will detail your daily tasks. Get accustomed to setting specific time slots for yourself on a daily and weekly basis. Be sure to stick to your new routine. Don’t allow anyone to interrupt your new outlook on life.

Seek support from a coach, mentor or trainer, who will assist you to begin or maintain a particular schedule that is right for you, and you’ll get a lot more done in a lot less time. A trained coach is equipped with tips and skills that can affect your life in a positive way. Don’t be afraid to ask for help because this might be just what you need to get your life on a path to peace and happiness.
